A weatherproof three-way commuter pack
The Forge is a 3-way commuter pack, transforming to a backpack for comfortable and efficient load carry, to a brief for business, and then to shoulder bag for casual carry. It also works as a 30 liter, one-bag travel pack. Tucked away in a hidden zipper, there’s a small-strap. Give that strap a pull and the Forge expands instantly from 20 to 30 liters, which adds enough room for several days of clothing, footwear and toiletries. The Forge is compatible with rolling luggage handles, features a TSA compliant fully protected and suspended laptop sleeve.
Featuring Black Ember weatherproof Cordura textile and YKK AquaGuard zippers, the Forge is a multifunction pack for everyday use that will keep your gear safe and dry. It has a clamshell opening, which means it unzips 360 degrees, so you can see all your gear laid out and well organized right in front of you.
Designed with logical gear access in mind, the Forge has all the organization needed for tech-centric lifestyles. External fast access for essentials like keys, wallet and phones; soft and protective pockets for Laptops and tablets; generous easy-access pockets; and hidden zipper pockets for secure items.
The “Butterfly Back-Panel” makes shoulder strap storage simple, and more importantly, allows room for the ergonomic 3D shoulder-straps. For optimized comfort and load carry: two layers of the same EVA-Foam found in the best running shoes make for an especially comfortable and supportive harness, while an airflow back-panel keeps you cool and dry in the summer heat.
Like all Black Ember products, the Forge benefits from the high-precision proprietary construction. All textile components, including the weatherproof, 3-layer, Cordura textile are laser-cut for precise assembly. This construction yields a super durable, over-engineered pack with a blacked-out, minimal and stealthy aesthetic.

The New Black Ember Forge
I have been following black ember forge for some time and finally decided to pull the trigger on this bag.
I very much liked the features that bag had so it seemed like a good match for me. Lots of different compartments for organization (which I love), a very nice padded and suspended pc compartment (so good that I do not use sleeves for a Lenovo P1 15", which is very pricey so I trust this compartment completely), and a possibility to expand the bag to gain 10 liters of capacity going from EDC work bag to a 2-day travel bag.
I have been using it for 2 months now and it is the most comfortable bag that I have ever carried as a back pack, the shoulderpads are really great and they fit very well on my chest, they wrap you relly nicely and are very well padded.
It also have a very minimalistic look, expecially if you remove the side handles. It looks very professional and nice.
Love the mag lock in the front compartment that I use for my car keys. Also the front compartment is really the best I ever had, great space and organization for everything you should need a quick access.
Side handles are also nice, I always use them to get my bag off of my shoulders.
All in all the bag is great but it has a few downsides.
First of all the compression straps. I tought they wouldn't be a big deal but they are, especially if you want to use it as a travel bag. At this price point (over 300€) you should have included something this essential (going to need to spend other 40€+shipping for this). Also the compression straps (as much as the side handles) are always going to be in your way when opening the bag because of horizontal clam shell opening.
And here we get to the second thing: the horizontal clam shell opening. This bag cannot be used as a backpack, it can be carried as such but not used as one because all the comparments are horizontal and so is the opening of the bag. If you want to get something out of the bag, you are going to need to put the bag down in a horizontal position. I do not like the fact that no metter how you put down your bag it is always going to get dirty as it doesn't have rubbered side on it (my last chrome backpack had it and it was very usefull, mostly on rainy days).
Lastly, it has a lot of pockets but they are all bidimensional. If you put something thicker it is going to make the bag look odd and is going to be more difficult to close it.
The only real place to put things with third dimension is the main compartment where there are no organizational features.
That beeing said, I really like the bag. It gives a very nice feeling, like I said it is VERY confortable to carry as a backpack, great look and color and I enjoy using it. I gave 4 stars because of the absence of the compression straps in the basic package.

Awesome bag
Great daily with a lot of room and flexibility. Amazing quality.
A little bit heavy if your looking for purely a briefcase. But that’s what you get with an expandable bag. Big enough to get me through a weekend getaway. In backpack mode it’s a dream.
